The month of January offers a new start for people in all walks of life. The noble tradition of making a New Year’s resolution can be a great way to change a habit or accomplish goals in your life.
For those affected by diabetes, a New Year’s resolution is especially important because there are many small things you can do to manage diabetes in a healthier way and start living a more fulfilling life. Its never too late to set these goals for yourself. At My Diabetes Home, we’d like to help you live better in 2013 and beyond.
It’s best to look first at some categories of diabetes wellness and see how they relate to your life:
- Exercise: Are you active on a regular basis?
- Diet: Do you have a specific meal plan, and do you follow it consistently?
- Medication: Are you keeping up with your diabetes prescriptions?
- Stress: Are you managing stress in a healthy and positive way?
A list like this can be overwhelming, and we suggest focusing on one aspect of diabetes wellness that you would like to improve in your life. Usually, resolutions like these are accomplished when small changes are made gradually, until they become a habit and part of your lifestyle.
For instance, a recent study by Boston University concluded that 10-minute bursts of exercise daily offered the same health benefits as spending hours in the gym. Completing simple daily tasks like walking or mowing the lawn showed improved health and reduced risk for study participants. The lesson learned is that “some exercise is better than nothing.” To us, that seems like a pretty manageable approach to living an active and healthy life–and certainly cheaper than a gym membership.
Perhaps you’re more concerned about keeping up with your medication. While there is no substitute to consulting with your doctor and pharmacist about your medication regimen, there are tools available to you that can help organize medication schedules and prescription plans.
Our mobile and web-based platform called MedSimple is designed to do just that. MedSimple is able to help with dose reminders, cost savings notifications, refills, medication information and more. The easiest part about MedSimple is that it works online and on your Android or iOS smartphone, so your meds always stay updated. It’s also free!
We hope that the New Year finds you well and making positive changes in your life. With the right tools and information, we’re confident you’ll succeed.
